What’s happening in the world of SEO and content marketing right now that could make a difference to how you do your business.

Google tests Internet speed in search result

We all test our own upload and download connection speeds at home, work or on the go from time to time, but now Google is testing a tool that will check Internet speeds directly in your search results.

Once a firm fixture, the search giant will check your Internet speed for you, right in the search results, effectively doing away with other companies offering the same.

Moz’s Dr Pete Meyers was the first to pick up on this and tweeted about it on 27 June, noting that it was not live yet.

Google says it’s relying on open Internet performance data company Measurement Lab to perform the test, but added that they’re not ready to roll out quite yet.

Twitter teaches businesses how to Tweet

On June 28 Twitter announced Dashboard for businesses, designed to help companies connect with the customers and community in a more efficient way.

The tool is free and available for iOS and desktop users.

It lifts out conversations around your business via a custom feed, provides insights into your Tweet performance and allows you to schedule Tweets – whether that is a good idea or not.

To quote Twitter: “For example, if you work at a cafe, you may see a Tweet from a customer who has a question about your hours. Or, if you’re a boutique owner, you might see a Tweet from a potential customer talking about one of your products. The ability to see these Tweets at a glance offers endless opportunities for you to connect with customers and potential customers with responses that add value.”

Content Marketing’s on the up

The Ascend2’s 2016 State of Content Marketing Survey shows signs that companies are seeing a ROI in content marketing (CM) efforts and are looking to invest more.

Here are some take-outs:

  • 9 in 10 marketers believe their CM efforts are now more effective
  • 35% report this efficacy is increasing significantly
  • 48% are developing an effective strategy
  • 47% says budget constraints remain a problem
  • 36% are not able to measure effectiveness to any great extent

The type of content that is showing most ROI are, in descending order: reports, blog posts and video/podcasts, while the latter and reports are the most difficult types of content to generate.
